Maria Theresa Thaler

What is everyone's opinion of this coin?

They cost here (in UK) roughly the same per oz as an eagle of maple. Does anyone have any? What do you think as an investment?

Cheers

I've never actually seen one in person. I looked it up on Wikkipedia and it seems to have been one of the most famous coins in history.

I have a couple and they are extremely cool. I am considering getting a few more. Like when I buy sovereigns, I like the idea of getting something old for a bullion price. Just wondered if anyone had any experience with them.

For bullion price? From my reading, they have .75 oz of silver. I agree with you, historical coins for the sub $20 range are cool.

CJul, I was just over on Ebay looking for thalers, almost all were "restrikes". Restrike doesn't seem to have a single definition except that the coin wasn't made on the stamped date. The term seems to leave a lot of wiggle room for the coin's pedigree.

I think the majority of them were restrikes.

Here is a very anally-retentive website

I just thought they were cute coins and had 3/4 oz of silver and were historically interesting. jeez ......  who ARE these people????

I also thought having coins that had been used, and perhaps still were, as currency wasn't a bad idea ...
